The history of March 8th began with the movement of female textile workers in the United States at the end of the 19th century. Enraged by this brutal oppression, on March 8, 1899, in the cities of Chicago and New York (in the United States), a powerful struggle broke out among female textile workers with the aim of demanding higher wages and reduced working hours.
Despite being brutally suppressed, the women remained incredibly united, persistently fighting and forcing the capitalist owners to make concessions. This significant victory strongly encouraged women worldwide, leading to many subsequent struggles and demonstrations.
On August 26 and 27, 1910, the second congress of international women was convened in Copenhagen (the capital of Denmark), attended by 100 female delegates from 17 countries. They decided to designate March 8th as International Women’s Day with the aim of fighting for the rights of women and children.
In our country, March 8th is also the anniversary of the uprising led by the Trung Sisters, the first two female national heroes who drove out the northern invaders and reclaimed national sovereignty.
Customs of March 8th around the world
Currently, 28 countries around the world officially recognize and celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8th. Some notable countries among these 28 include Angola, Belarus, China, Cuba, Laos, Russia, Mongolia, Ukraine, Portugal, the Netherlands, and Vietnam.
