Organizing International Women’s Day on March 8th

March 8th is International Women’s Day, also known as the “United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace.” On this day, many countries around the world, including Vietnam, organize grand celebrations to express their appreciation and honor women.

The origin and meaning of March 8th

The history of March 8th began with the movement of female textile workers in the United States at the end of the 19th century. During this period, capitalism was developing rapidly, especially in America. Capitalist owners employed a large workforce and exploited the labor of women and children, paying extremely low wages, which made the lives of women and children extremely miserable and impoverished.

Enraged by this brutal oppression, on March 8, 1899, in the cities of Chicago and New York (in the United States), a powerful struggle broke out among female textile workers with the aim of demanding higher wages and reduced working hours.

The origin and meaning of March 8th (International Women’s Day):

Despite being brutally suppressed, the women remained incredibly united, persistently fighting and forcing the capitalist owners to make concessions. This significant victory strongly encouraged women worldwide, leading to many subsequent struggles and demonstrations.

On August 26 and 27, 1910, the second congress of international women was convened in Copenhagen (the capital of Denmark), attended by 100 female delegates from 17 countries. They decided to designate March 8th as International Women’s Day with the aim of fighting for the rights of women and children.
