International Children’s Day is a festival dedicated to children, an occasion for them to have fun and receive meaningful gifts from relatives, family, and school. International Children’s Day is celebrated annually on June 1st. It is a holiday specifically for children and young people around the world.
On this day, many schools and businesses always wish to organize a truly joyful and attractive program for their students and employees’ children. The success of the June 1st program depends greatly on the professionalism and reputation of the event organizing company, as well as their understanding and love for children – the future seedlings of the nation.
Origin and Significance of International Children’s Day on June 1st
International Children’s Day was first proposed at the World Conference on Child Welfare in 1925. In 1949, the Women’s International Democratic Federation decided to designate June 1st of each year as International Children’s Protection Day. The purpose was to demand that governments take responsibility for children’s lives, to call for a reduction in military budgets to increase education budgets, and to protect and care for adolescents and children.
The origin of International Children’s Day is linked to a tragic event in the past. In the early morning of June 1, 1942, Nazi Germany surrounded the village of Lidice (in Czechoslovakia). There, they brutally massacred 66 people and sent 104 children to concentration camps. 88 children died in gas chambers, and 9 others were forced to become collaborators for the Nazis. The village of Lidice was left completely deserted.
Two years later, on June 10, 1944, the Nazis again surrounded the town of Oradour (in France). They herded 400 people into a church, including many women and over 100 children, and set it on fire, burning them to death in a horrific manner.
The first International Children’s Day celebration in Vietnam took place during the resistance against French colonialism. Despite this, Uncle Ho always showed special care and concern for children across the country. He wrote a congratulatory letter to the children, saying: “I love you very much, children. I promise you that when we drive out all the French invaders and our resistance is successful, I, along with the government and organizations, will strive to gradually make you well-fed, able to play, study, and be happy…”
Since then, Vietnamese children have always had two major festivals each year to enjoy: June 1st and the Mid-Autumn Festival. The organization of programs commemorating International Children’s Day and the Mid-Autumn Festival has always been emphasized. People take these occasions to give gifts and express their affection for their children and grandchildren, as well as for students and young children throughout the country.
How to Successfully Organize International Children’s Day?
Organizing a program specifically for children has many differences compared to regular programs for the general public. Children are young bamboo shoots, the future of our country, so all activities and performances in the International Children’s Day program on June 1st always need to ensure elements that are age-appropriate, wholesome, educational, and humanitarian.
Some activities commonly organized on Vietnam’s Children’s Day:
Organizing play areas for children, teaching them traditional and folk games.
Book and Comic Festival
Children’s Cultural Performance Program
Visiting and giving gifts to poor and disabled children
Organizing interactive sessions to spread knowledge about sex education, future dreams, rules for encountering strangers, life skills, and more for children.
